Savings to the Homeowner

October 07, 2011 at 1:46 PM

After his basement flooded, an anxious homeowner called Kent Home Services hoping to find an answer to the problem. A Kent representative met the homeowner and made a thorough inspection of the home's finished basement and around the outside of the home. Upon examination of the water damage, it was obvious that the homeowner already had an existing sump pump and interior drain system that was working efficiently. However, this was not the source of the problem. While examining the outside grade, Kent Home Service's expert discovered that the ground was sloping toward the house and thus allowing water to enter a basement window and run under the wall plate.

The representative recommended changing the outside grade, digging down four feet to the footing, and filling in with stone to enable the water to run to the footing drain and disperse from there. The homeowner agreed with the assessment and was relieved to know the actual cause. With this information, he disclosed the fact that recently a competitor had inspected his basement and quoted an entire interior drain system and new sump pump to solve their problem. Since his sump pump was working this obviously would have been redundant and a needless expense.

The homeowner was happy to go with Kent Home Service's estimate. Within a week, a crew arrived and began the project. The landscaping rock and plantings were removed before excavating along the concrete wall. The exposed trench was filled with 5/8" stone down to the footing. This allowed the water to drain from the surface downward to the footing where the drain tile carried it to the existing sump pump. Soon the outside drainage work was completed and the landscaping rock and plantings were put back in place. The next significant rainfall proved that the job was successful. Since the basement was no longer wet, the homeowner had the interior finished with new dry wall and carpet.

When water makes its way to your basement, remember that Kent Home Services provides a vast range of solutions and reliable experts who know just what a customer needs to solve the problem at hand.
